WE’RE BACK! Farm Update and Tour

Finally! We have taken a long break from the tubes and I primarily am feeling SUPER refreshed. I think I needed that. It’s easy for RUclips or any other social media platform to become a source of false identity and to feel an obligation to post post post at the risk of lacking in the areas of faith and family. We are so grateful to be able to have that break and yet now jump back in! Most of m...

    Great video! Just a question: If I use cardboard, then install the weed fabric, and top it with pebbles, will that be a good idea? Right now I only have the pebbles and I'm getting weeds all over. Thanks for the advice!

    Well my friend, you have a long way to go. Some of the time you talk BS. You see, while I agree, that printed paper (any, including cardboard) should not be used in a garden or compost, your remarks about oil are incorrect. Oil is of organic origin, so products made from oil degrade. Plastics for instance get devoured by bacteria. Do your research before you make your videos, so you don't embarrass yourself.

    Are those the shoes of a dude, of a frugal person, or of a gardener? Or is it all three. No shade, not an insult. • @gardenguychannel
      @gardenguychannel 22 дня назад

      Sadly something has to go to add something new. A good life lesson too! But thankfully if you can cut out the grass and preserve some of the soil then you can use it for sod somewhere you want to grow better grass!

    Can i plant extablished plants ontop of cardboard and begin garden, if I use enough topsoil and the mulch? How about if I use a weed barrier on top of the cardboard, then soil and mulch? Can I bury coffee, orange and potatoe skins under the cardboard, or will that feed the weeds and prolong the process? Thank you.

    • @gardenguychannel
      @gardenguychannel 27 дней назад

      You can plant into the compost if you cut through it. Or you can wait for it to decompose. If you add compost under the cardboard it’ll just decompose. Main thing is you don’t want to let the weeds underneath see daylight for atleast 3-4 months so that they die off. Hope this helps!

    Just scrolled through all comments. There is one way to tell someone's approximate age without ever seeing them and it works 90% of the time. The older they are the more they try their best to respond to as many people as possible or at least like comments to show they saw. Why? Because they were taught it's rude not to. Newer generations have been taught the opposite, that it doesnt really matter. Look at channels like Project Farm with over 2 million subscribers. Or Ken Tamplin with over a million. They still take time out of their day for those people that took time out of theirs to say kind things to them or ask questions. This trend saddens me. Kindness and simple common decency is slowly going out the window. I live south of Knoxville so I subscribed when I found this channel. Didn't take long to realize I should probably just move along. Best wishes to your growing family. 😊

      Thank you for your honest comment, sir! Yes I know I haven’t been great at responding to folks. After having our kiddo I realized I only have so much time and it will either be with family and God or being preoccupied with business endeavors. So for the time being I try to answer questions but family comes first. With the amount of questions coming in from all the videos it’s truly tough to keep up! But I’ll keep trying :) Blessings!

    Nearly all straw contains Glyphosate (aka Roundup). It can poison your soil FOR YEARS. Only easy way to remove most of it is to plant more wheat. That will draw out the poison - at least some of it anyway. Note: Not sure about paraquat. Presumably that too will be problematic.

      Pine needles actually have a Tannin in them that may prevent seeds from growing well. So I wouldn’t use them in the veg garden. Only under berry bushes and brambles and trees

    I wonder how long the herbicide stays in the straw? I didn't realize it was treated last few years until our watermelons and other legumes did very poorly! Does the herbicide dissipate after a year? I'm guessing I will have to physically remove the straw and not burn it.😢

    Best way is to get a product called ram board from Lowes is a really compressed thin hard card board use it instead of fabric and mulch but mulch with leaf litter or spring grass clippings before everything goes to seed few inches deep first then mulch with wood chips four inches deep or you have to flip the top four inches right before a hard freeze to kill the rizome roots

    With time the temporary Nitrogen used to break the carbon down gets returned to the soil plus then some. If you've been layering straw, paper, cardboard, compost, dead leaves for a couple years, there will be plenty of nutrients available for everything. Continuing this practice will result in deep soft rich soil. Personally, I stay away from manures because they're not needed. Dead leaves and hay return every nutrient needed and worms and michorizal fungus convert things into the right form for plants to use and in perfect balance. It's best, imo, to build your soil up several months before planting by layering cardboard and paper over the top of the grass and covering it with leaves and hay and forgetting about it. Repeat this process after every growing period and just individual holes for your plants, leaving the surrounding material to trap moisture and keep the worms happy. They will till every square inch of your dirt so no plowing. You can also make compost tea and foliar feed everything to correct the temporary Nitrogen deficiency. The runoff will collect and soak into the carbon.
